Global Water Initiative Project in Garissa
July 27, 2010

'Studying in a school without a latrine means going the whole day without relieving oneself and being at risk of being attacked by wild animals' says Farhiya Salat, Class 2 pupil. Farhiya is among many pupil in Jarajara primary school that did not have proper latrines and sanitation. When CARE Kenya's Global Water Initiative (GWI) project team visited the school, they learnt that the school community did not pay much attention to what happens to excreta once deposited either in latrines or on open fields. This led the team to realize that the earlier the school fully understood the benefits and risks associated with poorly managed excreta, the better for their health improvement.

The main inhabitants of the ASAL are pastoralists and their lives are characterized by chronic vulnerability to drought related shocks. In recent years, intensity and frequency of the drought is increasing and thuds leading to a gradual erosion of their livestock based livelihoods. Balambala town is such area that has suffered the effects of drought related shocks. The town is located approximately 134 km from Garissa town, North Eastern Province of Kenya. Most of the 7,000 inhabitants of Balambala are mainly pastoralists with a few having small scale businesses. | July 30, 2010
