'Studying in a school without a latrine means going the whole day without relieving oneself and being at risk of being attacked by wild animals' says Farhiya Salat, Class 2 pupil.
Farhiya is among many pupil in Jarajara primary school that did not have proper latrines and sanitation. When CARE Kenya's Global Water Initiative (GWI) project team visited the school, they learnt that the school community did not pay much attention to what happens to excreta once deposited either in latrines or on open fields. This led the team to realize that the earlier the school fully understood the benefits and risks associated with poorly managed excreta, the better for their health improvement. |
