Conflict in Somalia and the neighboring countries has displaced thousands. Since 1991, CARE Kenya has provided care and maintenance in three refugees camps. Today, we go beyond 'care and maintenance' to development within a relief context.
The Emergency and Relief Operations (ERO) Sector spearheads operations in the Dagahaley, Hagadera and IFO camps, hosting a population of 171,957, 96.3% from Somalia.
Some of the salient needs include food, shelter, potable water, education, and environmental sanitation. A combination of projects, for instance, constructing and maintaining boreholes, building and equipping schools, distributing food and nonfood items and promoting the rights of women continue to deliver hope, making life in Dadaab more bearable.
ERO also builds the economic confidence of the poor refugees through Group Savings and Loans Scheme, while using sports to reach out to the youth.
North Eastern Province covers 126,902 square kilometers with a projected population of 962,143, predominantly pastoralists. This region is prone to severe droughts, heavy flooding, and fatal human and livestock disease outbreaks, impoverishing the already destitute communities.
Through the Emergency Operations Program, CARE Kenya cushions these communities against the cyclic disasters providing immediate basic support. We respond to disasters reconstructing infrastructure and supplying basic amenities to stabilize the disrupted community.
